1830s - The Pioneer Era

Life at Niagara began in pioneer conditions and the nuns first occupied the tavern building, which had been standing on the site since the 1830s. The former property owner (Colin Skinner) had established the Canada House, also known as the “Ontario House” tavern on Lot 160, immediately adjacent to Portage Road.

The Irish-based Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary had arrived in Toronto in 1847 to serve the needs of the immigrant Irish population, which helped the Ladies of Loretto to move here in 1961.

Fireworks over Niagara Falls

There's nothing quite like the sight of exploding fireworks over the brink of Niagara Falls to make your trip a memorable one. You can catch Canada's longest running spectacular fireworks series throughout the summer and during the Winter Festival of Lights, and select other holidays throughout the year.

Canada-based Three Bridges Properties (Group) Corp. is developing a mix used development project to redefine the Niagara Falls skyline. The property land has rich historical heritage, with the historic Loretto Academy building on the site. The existing building will be incorporated into the comprehensive project design in an effort to honour history and respect tradition. In particular, the existing building with its mansard roof and cupola will be retained, conserved and restored into its river-facing facade. The 4th floor destroyed in a disastrous fire in 1938 will also be restored. A private club and museum are considered to incorporated in the old building.

The Project’s three buildings in a park-like setting are designed to maximize views to Niagara Falls. The project will include one or more luxury hotel with world-class amenities and condominium residences above. This development will transform the cityscape in the Fallsview Tourism District, Niagara Falls’ prime dining, entertainment, and nightlife corridor.

Three bridges's corporate vision is building three bridges — of diversified cultures in this multicultural city, of economic development in the area, and of friendship and understanding between Asia and North America.

The Great Falls Project has been described by real estate industry experts as the most anticipated building in eastern Canada, on 7.385 acres of the most desirable available land in Niagara Falls. Upon the completion of the hotel, the project should attract millions more visitors from Asia and boost local tourism, and create over a thousand employment opportunities for the Greater Niagara Region.

History of Loretto

Loretto Academy School is a substantial reminder of the role that the Roman Catholic Church, and specifically, the Sisters of Loretto, played in the history of Niagara Falls. The property first served as the location of one of the early taverns/inns in the Niagara Region in 1830s. The Sisters of Loretto acquired the property on 1861, and from 1861 to 2005, the sisters ran a convent, boarding school, and spiritual retreat here for 144 years.

The developer of the land, 3Bridges Properties (Group) Corp., is redeveloping the property land into a luxury hotel and limited-edition residences while incorporating the existing Loretto Academy building. Along with the restoration and improvements to the heritage building, it will have its former mansard roof rebuilt as it becomes the centerpiece to the redevelopment of the site.
